Jivamukti Yoga: (All Levels)

Jivamukti Yoga is a method which reintegrates the physical, philosophical & spiritual aspects of Yoga. Jivamukti was developed in 1984 by its world-famous founders, Sharon Gannon & David Life, and is practiced around the world.  The Jivamukti method is one of nine internationally recognized styles of Hatha Yoga.  Classes involve an ever changing flow of postures (vinyasa) that is intended to challenge you on many levels. Each class revolves around a theme based on ancient wisdom and emphasizes the importance of practicing with an elevated intention. Chanting, meditation, and inspiring music are always included.

The name Jivamukti (pronounced Jee-va-mook-tee), taken from the Sanskrit jivan ~ individual soul / mukti ~ liberation, meaning liberation while still living in the body. The goal of this holistic practice is to help you attain your fullest potential, in every sense -- physical, spiritual, intellectual and emotional.

Jivamukti is a challenging form of Hatha Yoga taught in a vinyasa style, which incorporates chanting of Sanskrit mantra and weaves spiritual teachings from source texts into the physical instruction of the asana.  Classes are based on five key tenets, which include:

1.        Scripture ~ teachings from ancient Sanskrit scriptures.

2.        Bhakti ~ devotion; finding a greater purpose for our lives.

3.        Ahimsa ~ a non-harming, compassionate lifestyle.

4.        Music ~ use of chanting/uplifting music to elevate the spirit.

5.        Meditation ~ reconnecting to our true inner selves.

Each month, Jivamukti yoga teachers around the world teach spiritual lessons based on a “Focus of the Month.”  Spiritual talks draw from ancient scriptures such as the Bhagavad Gita, the Upanishads, and Patanjali's Yoga Sutras as well as drawing in modern commentary from leaders such as Ghandi, Martin Luther King Jr. and others.

SPECIALTY CLASSES

Capoeira

Adult Classes: $10 Per Person Drop-In Fee OR $50 per month Instructor: Professor Dentista of Grupo Unidade Capoeira.  Capoeira is a martial art created by African slaves transported to Brasil 500 years ago. It was created in secret as a means for the slaves to protect themselves. In order to fool the slavemasters, Capoeira was disguised as a ritual dance, this allowed Capoeiristas to play in plain view of their owners, as it was illegal under penalty of imprisonment and/or death, for slaves to practice the martial arts. Today, Capoeira is a rich cultural experience with exchanges of ideas of peoples from all over the world. Capoeira is "played", from the United States of America to South Africa, from the European Union to Japan and just about everywhere in between. Capoeira can be highly energetic and powerful to calm and serene. Capoeira is a lifetime of discipline, showing respect to the culture that spawned it, to the nation that cultivated it, to those who came before us, and to those we will teach that will follow us on the path of Axe.
